The relationship between academic self-confidence and success of primary school 4th grade students

In this study, the relationship between the academic self-confidence of 4th grade primary school students and their mathematics achievement was investigated. The study was designed with relational research model. The population of the study consists of students studying in the 4th grade of primary school in Çumra district centre of Konya province in the 2022-2023 academic year. Among this universe, 532 students determined by cluster sampling constitute the sample of the study. As a data collection tool in the study, the academic self-confidence scale developed by Kalkan, Bakioğlu, and Toprak (2020) for students, consisting of 5 sub-factors and 25 items including academic self-efficacy belief, social competence, academic reputation, academic motivation and social satisfaction, and the mathematics achievement test prepared by Balcı (2019) to determine the mathematics achievement of primary school 4th grade students and consisting of 22 multiple-choice items were used. According to the results of the study, it was determined that the academic self-confidence and mathematics achievement of 4th grade primary school students were at a medium level. While the mathematics achievement of the students did not differ significantly according to the variables of gender, receiving support education and having a room of their own, it was determined that it differed significantly according to the variables of receiving pre-school education, mother's education level, father's education level and number of siblings. According to the results of the linear regression analysis conducted to determine whether 4th grade students' academic self-confidence has an effect on their mathematics achievement, it was concluded that students' academic self-confidence levels positively and significantly affected their mathematics achievement.
