Abstract (EN)
Clive Bigham's book With the Turkish Army in Thessaly stands out as one of the most significant first-hand sources on the Greco-Turkish War of 1897. As an observer within the Ottoman army on behalf of the British government, Bigham provides a comprehensive account of the events, covering both their military and political aspects. In this context, the work is not only valuable for understanding the military dimensions of the war but also crucial for comprehending the international strategic and diplomatic balances of the period. That book contains a detailed analysis of the Ottoman army's military strength and tactics. Clive Bigham particularly highlights the leadership skills of Edhem Pasha, who commanded the Ottoman forces during the war. He asserts that Edhem Pasha's successful strategic decisions were decisive in the rapid defeat of Greek forces. Additionally, Bigham emphasizes the Ottoman army's adaptability to modern military methods and strategies, challenging and even refuting Western prejudices about the army's supposed technical weakness and backwardness. Bigham's assessments reveal that the Ottoman army was able to swiftly adapt to contemporary military methods and keep up with the conditions of modern warfare. His observations contributed to changing Western perceptions of the Ottoman military capacity, leading to a more favorable and realistic approach, particularly in Britain and other European countries. In this regard, the book significantly influenced how the Ottoman army was perceived in the West. Known for his military historical expertise, Clive Bigham's work sheds light on not only military narratives but also diplomatic and political perspectives. For these reasons, the book is considered an essential reference for understanding the political and military influence of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans at the turn of the 20th century. Furthermore, Bigham draws attention to the Empire's efforts to regain its influence in the Balkan region, contributing significantly to the understanding of regional power dynamics. In conclusion, Clive Bigham's With the Turkish Army in Thessaly is an academically significant source that holds great importance in terms of the Ottoman Empire's position at the end of the 19th century, its military modernization, and the transformation of its international image. By offering a thorough analysis of the Thessalian War from both military and diplomatic perspectives, the book serves as an essential resource for gaining a precise and in-depth understanding of the Ottoman Empire's role in the Balkans.
