Abstract (EN)

Construction industry is one of the leading industries in the world economy. Construction projects are becoming bigger and more complicated day by day thanks to innovations in technology, bigger financial potentials and increacing demand. It requires big amount of effort to build successful projects. Success of a contruction project is measured by quality, cost and time. It is important to sustain a standard level of quality withing the budget of the project without delays. It is a complicated process to finish a successful project by managing time, quality and costs. This study aims to determine the factors affecting the contruction project success. The content of this study is as following: In the first section, the main objective of this study and the definition of the problem are identified. The scope and content of the study are also explained in this section. In the second section, the studies which contain the factors affecting the project success in the literature are scanned systematically by using the relevant keywords. The foundings of the literature review were narrowed down to 15 journals. Relevant criteria were applied to the studies and number of articles were decreased to 33 to obtain accurate results. 13 of these articles are used in meta-synthesis analysis. The factors which affect the success of a construction project are grouped in to 4 groups. These groups are: -Client Based Factors -Contractor Based Factors -Project Based Factors -External Factors. Each of the factors in these groups are explained shortly in this section. These studies consists of studies which focus on only one specific success factor as well as studies which contain analysis of all success factors. A synthesis is made by using the data of these studies to determine the key factors affecting the construction project success. For the synthesis, the studies which focus on only one success factor are excluded to obtain more accurate results. In the end of this section, a relative comparison is made to show the key factors found. The key factors affecting the project success are determined as following, respectively: -Coordination of sub-contractors, site management -Organization of the contractor -Time management of material supplying -Decision making -Preparation and adequacy of shop drawings. -Financing of the contractor -Lack of labor -Communication -Payments made by client to the contractor -Time management and material supplying -Adequacy of construction materials -Obtaining permits -Weather conditions -Competence of the personnel The third section consists of a case study in the scope of key success factors determined in the second section. The case which is Izmit Earthquake Museum is investigated detailly. Each project success factor is discussed in relative effect order, the current situation is explained and then one or more solutions are suggested. In the last sections, the results of the study are stated and suggestions are given for further studies. This study can be developed by limiting the success factors to specific project characteristics like location, project type and project delivery method. The case study can also be done on multiple projects with similar characteristics to obtain better results. This study mainly aims to be a handbook for construction sector professionals by making evaluations of project success factors with a case study.
