A research on the capital dynamics of contractorship in the field of construction sector: The case of Bursa

This study is based on the exploration and analysis of the capital dynamics of contractors, which are one of the key actors in the construction sector. The primary objective of this study which was conducted in the central districts of Bursa, is to reveal the kind of vocational backgrounds contractors pursued before, their ways to obtain the profession, organizational structures and the capital dynamics of contractors by reaching the combination and volume of the capital they have obtained through their corporate relations. In this study, Bourdieu's sociological perspective was used, utilizing Bourdieu's concepts of "field", "capital", "game" and "habitus". However, ıt must be noted that the word "contractor" used in this study, is only used to refer to the construction contractors in the sector. In this study, which was conducted with the qualitative research method during May and June of 2024,the capital dynamics of contractors were evaluated by utilizing from the case pattern model. The participating sample group in this study, consists of13 construction contractors which are based in Bursa. Semi- structured interview form, observation and scanning methods were applied as the interview technique of the study. The data obtained was evaluated through the descriptive analysis method and findings were revealed accordingly. As a result of the field research, it was seen that some participators don't accept contracting as a profession due to the lack of a professional law on contracting. In the contracting profession, which is directed by family heritage, environmental effects and private preferences, it was seen that type of capital has an important impact, and it was concluded that the most important capitals in the sector were economic, social and political. It was found that contractor individuals are able to reach new sources, and have it easier to diversify them in the light of these three capitals.
