Production of recycled aggregate and binder materials from construction demolition waste

Abstract (EN)
In this study, the potential of using recycled aggregates and binders produced from construction demolition waste instead of cement and natural aggregates in concrete was investigated. Within this scope, waste taken from a demolished building was processed through various processes to produce both aggregate and recycled binder (GDB) materials. Raw material of GDB was fired at 400, 600, 800 and 1000 ⁰C for 2, 3.5 and 5 hours to determine the optimum temperature and time. In addition to strength tests of GDB mortars SEM, TGA and XRD analyzes were also carried out. 28-day compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio measurements were carried out on concrete samples with recycled aggregate. The addition of recycled aggregate phenomenon was evaluated separately for both coarse aggregates, fine aggregates and all aggregate groups in concretes of the same gradation. According to the findings, the highest strength among the mortar samples produced using GDB was obtained from mixture with GDB fired at 800 ⁰C for 2 hours in the study. The addition of recycled aggregate increased the compressive strength of concrete in almost all mixtures where natural aggregate was replaced by recycled aggregate. Considering the results; if proper separation of demolition waste, crushing and screening of seperated demolition waste, removing of mortar residues and then washing of recycled aggregates operations respectively could apply suitably, this process will significantly reduce the pressure on natural resources.
