Insecticidal effects of bitter melon and anise seed extracts on Trogoderma granarium L. (Coleoptera: Dermestidae)

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the insecticidal activities of hexane and ethyl alcohol extracts from Citrullus colocynthis and Pimpinella anisum seeds were investigated on Trogoderma granarium. Statistical analyses showed that both plant extracts significantly affected egg inhibition and larval mortality. The hexane extract was more effective on larval mortality in both direct and indirect application methods and showed a greater effect than the ethyl extract. In terms of egg inhibition, the direct method performed better than the indirect method. Ethyl alcohol extract showed an inhibition rate of 14.82%, while hexane extract showed an inhibition rate of 28.45%. In addition, application methods were compared and it was found that direct application method was more effective than indirect application method. In summary, this study concluded that hexane and ethyl alcohol extracts from C. colocynth seeds can effectively control the larval population of T. granarium beetle, especially at high concentrations, and hexane performed better than P. anisum seed extracts in both application methods.
