Abstract (EN)
Although some studies claim that Akhi values still guide craft industries today in the Turkish business context, there is a lack of explorative studies that illuminates the issue. This study examines the values, traditions and practices in the Turkish jewelry industry. Specifically, the study aims to understand if Akhi values which dates back to nearly a millennium ago are still intact today among Turkish jewelers. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 jewelers in İstanbul and Ankara. In addition, 2 focus group studies were conducted in Ankara. The data from the interviews and focus groups were analyzed by NVivo 10 qualitative data analysis software. The results imply that many Akhi values continue to guide business decisions and relationships in the jewelry industry. On the other hand, certain values of Akhism are not observable anymore in today's jewelry industry. The study contributes to the literature by elaborating on the persistence and disappearance of Akhi values.
