Investigation of the moisture susceptibility characteristic of Mugla marble within hot mix asphalt

Abstract (EN)

Due to the increment in commercial developments, new highway networks are being constructed each day. The effect of the raise in axle loads due to developments in technology and the variation in climate conditions caused by global warming, cause the reduction of performance in existing roads, service life, and the deformations in flexible pavement. Nowadays, researchers are making research on alternative sources because of the limited resources used in road construction. In this study, the Marshall Mix Design method for Hot Mix Asphalt mixtures was used to determine the optimum bitumen contents for all mixtures. The resistance against water-induced damage of bituminous mixtures prepared with three different types of aggregates (Limestone, Calcite based marble waste and Peridotite) has been evaluated with the utilization of two different types of bituminous binders (B50/70, B100/150). In this sense, traditional bitumen tests have been applied on B 50/70, and B 100/150 classified virgin (unmodified) binder and aggregate tests have been performed to determine the properties of aggregates (Limestone, Calcite based marble waste and Peridotite). The water-induced damage characteristics of hot mix asphalt (HMA) containing different aggregate types (Limestone, Calcite based marble waste and Peridotite) have also been investigated in this study. For this purpose, the addition of hydrated lime as an anti-stripping agent to the samples prepared with limestone, calcite and peridotite aggregate has been added to evaluate the performance of mixtures on water-induced damage. Stripping and water-induced damage properties of samples were evaluated by Nicholson Stripping Test (ASTM D 1664) and Modified Lottman Test (AASHTO T 283), respectively. Results indicated that the mechanical properties, tensile strength ratio and Marshall parameters of calcite-based marble waste and peridotite aggregate remain within the specification limits. Addition anti-stripping additives significantly increased the indirect tensile strength values and tensile strength ratio of all asphalt mixtures. The utilization of 1.5% hydrated lime in the wet addition method has shown a significant improvement in terms of moisture susceptibility. Calcite based marble waste prepared using hydrated lime additive showed less effect due to aggregate type than bituminous mixtures prepared without using the hydrated lime additive. By taking into consideration all the results, it is thought that waste aggregates can be used as an alternative to limestone aggregate and that waste aggregates will be recycled to the economy.
