Determination of trace elements and total antioxidant capacity in obese Iraqi patients

The patient group consists of 59 people, 35 males and 24 females between the ages of 2-17. Samples were collected from the patients examined at Al Khayal Hospital. The antioxidant level was determined by measuring the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) at serum concentrations using UV spectrophotometric method. Trace element levels in serum samples were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Statistical Analysis System-SAS (2012) program was used to determine the effect of different factors on study parameters. T-test was used to make a significant comparison between means. Significantly higher (TAC) concentrations (p <0.01) were observed in the control group compared to the patients. With the trace element analysis in serum, mean values of Zn, Cu, Fe in the patient group, respectively, (106.52 ± 0.76) and (70.44 ± 0.76) and (65.85 ± 1.97) μg / dl; In the control group, it was determined as (53.73 ± 2.11), (31.16 ± 0.87) and (91.12 ± 3.00) μg / dl, respectively. It was found that there was a significant difference in terms of trace elements in the samples taken from the patient and control groups (p <0.01). In conclusion, this study shows that low serum TAC concentrations and altered trace elements have a relationship and effect on obesity.
