Effect of redesining the workplaces on productivity: 5Sapplication in a parquet firm

Increasing the yield, quality and profit of semi-finished or product in enterprises with a certain production process is very difficult to reach with small investments in today‟s conditions. In order to be between the competition and shareholder in the market, the enterprises have tried to provide services or products with minimum investment, high quality, and minimum investment at any time. For these reasons, lean manufacturing techniques have been started to work in order to work more efficiently in the enterprises. With the philosophy of lean production, minimum cost and minimum stock are produced and wastes can be prevented with high quality and fast production. With this study, 5S technique, which is one of the lean production techniques, is applied in the production of laminated parquet from forest products industry sub sector. With this application, it is aimed to reveal positive or negative situations to be experienced in the application of 5S technique. Within the scope of the study, applications have been made in the sorting department, which is an important part of parquet production. In the study, first of all, 5S technique was recorded before the application, 5S application was explained step by step and the results obtained after 5S technique were compared with the first results. As a result of this study, 20% labor gain was achieved with 5S technique. At the end of the study, it was determined that cleaning process was reduced from 17 minutes to 10 minutes by applying 5S technique. As a result of the application, average product quantity has increased by 38,4% in the last 2 years as a result of 5S technique. Keywords: Forest product industry, lean production, parquet, 5S.
