Management of di̇versi̇ty in business organizations: An examination of textile companies in Giresun province

Management of employees with different qualities (diversity management) is a subject of increasing importance in our country. Because, employees with different characteristics supposedly would contribute to organization's activities and purposes greatly. The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of textile industry employees in Giresun province as related to diversity management. A survey concerning diversity management was administered to 108 white-color employees working in four textile companies. Diversity management measure used in this study consists of 24 items and six dimensions. Convenience sampling method was used to obtain data. In order to test the hypotheses developed for the study, one-sample t-test and one-way ANOVA statistical techniques were used to analyze the collected data. Hypothesis of the research focused around comparing employee responses on diversity management on the basis of employees' demographic characteristics. Results of the analyses show that employee diversity dimension of the scale differentiate by employee's gender, position on the job and marital status significantly. Organizational justice dimension of the scale on the other hand varies by employees' position and gender significantly. In terms of values dimension of diversity management scale there is a statistically significant variation by gender only. Work practices dimension of the diversity management scale shows no variation by any of the demographic variables employed in the study. Finally communication dimension of the diversity management scale exhibits significant variation by age and educational level of employees.
