ISO 14001 environmental management system standard and case analysis in Turkey

Abstract (EN)

Since the second half of twentieth century the issue of environmental pollutionhas taken place in international agenda. The fact that environmental pollution respectsno boundries has made it necessary for solutions that have been thought out to bedeveloped through international corporation. Accordingly environmental managementsystems,which aim at the minimization of waste in the process of goods and services andthus the protection of the environment and efficient use of resources, have gainedimportance. Consequently, the series of ISO 14000 standards has been developed byInternational Organization for Standardization (ISO) and ISO 14001 EnvironmentalManagement Standard was announced in 1996.In the first chapter of the thesis, firstly the important terms have been explained.In addition, ISO, which developed ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard,has been introduced and the significance of international corporation in the preventionof environmental pollution has been evaluated. The BS 7750 (British Standard 7750)which constituted the bases of ISO 14001 has been evaluated and also the basicprinciples of Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and ISO 14001 have beenmentioned.In the second chapter of the thesis, which is on economy and environmentalinteraction, the applicability of ISO 14001 as a means of providing a sustainableenvironment as well as a sustainable economich growth balance has been discussed. Atthis point, the fact that ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard has developedas a means of competition and a global passport in the export of goods has beenevaluated. In this context, ISO 14001 has been investigated with respect to sustainableenvironment and sustainable trade by dealing with ISO 14001 implementation results ofvarious countries. The five-year national development plans have also been researchedinto.In the last chapter, a survey directed towards the determination ofimplementation results of organizations with ISO 14001 in Turkey has been evaluated.Views and suggestions have been offered in connection with the issues that are found tobe strategic.Key Words: 1) ISO 14001, 2) Environmental Management System,3) Environmental Performance, 4) Sustainable Environment, 5) Sustainable Trade
