Abstract (EN)
The present work was supported by the Research Fund of the Istanbul Universty. Project No:TDK 2018-29832 Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major health problem all over the world, with increasing prevalence every passing year. In the study, 91 polygamous male individuals admitted to Istanbul Faculty of Medicine were investigated in terms of infection with "Chlamydia trachomatis", "Neisseria gonorrhoeae", "Trichomonas vaginalis", "Mycoplasma hominis", "Mycoplasma genitalium", "Ureaplasma urealyticum", and "Ureaplasma parvum". The agents were investigated using "AnyplexTM II STI-7 Real Time Multiplex PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) Detection Kit (Seagene, Korea)" using the urine samples of patients. Of 91 patients, 34 (37.4%) were found to have a positivity, whereas no agent was detected in 57 (62.6%) of the patients. Of these 34 individuals, 13 (38.2%) had U. urealyticum, 17 (50%) had U. parvum, 7 (20.6%) had M. hominis, 3 (8.8%) had C. trachomatis, 3 (8.8%) had M. genitalium, and 2 (5.9%) had N. gonorrhoeae. Of the 34 individuals, 23 (67.6%) had single-type infections, whereas 11 (32.4%) had mixed infections. Of the 23 patients with single-type infections, U. urealyticum was detected in 8 (34.8%), U. parvum in 11 (47.8%), C. trachomatis in 2 (8.7%), N. gonorrhoeae in 1 (4.3%) and M. genitalium in 1 (4.3%) patient. Of 11 patients with mixed infections, 3 (27.3%) had U. parvum and M. hominis, 4 (36.4%) had U. urealyticum and M. hominis, 1 (9.1%) had U. urealyticum and U. parvum, 1 (9.1%) had M. genitalium and C. trachomatis, 1 (9.1%) had U. parvum and N. gonorrhoeae, and 1 (9.1%) had U. parvum and M. genitalium. Fisher Exact Chi-square test was used for statistical evaluation. In line with these results, our study highlights the necessity to look at more than one sexually transmitted agents in a routine screening. We also believe that the findings of our study will contribute to other studies in terms of prevalence.
