In the first section, the garden design concept that developed in the Ottoman Period in Istanbul, and the elements that determine the design characteristics of the gardens were examined. In the second section, the historical gardens in Istanbul were classified by taking into consideration of the structures related to them and their utilization purposes. Representative gardens belonging to each class were selected, and historical development, aesthetic understanding and design principles of each selected garden were specified. Moreover, old maps, plans and photographs related to the selected gardens were compared with the current maps, plans and photographs, and also the state of preservation of the gardens' design were evaluated by field examination. In the third section, all of the architectural elements present in the gardens included in the study were classified with respect to their utilization, and also information about their design, material properties and construction techniques were given. In the last section of this chapter, the design features and material diversity of the gardens were tried to be presented through a table showing which architectural element determined within the scope of the study is located in which classified garden. In the third chapter, general conservation issues of historical gardens, and material degradation of their architectural elements were discussed. In addition, at the end of this section, a table is presented to show the distribution of detected conservation problems throghout the classified gardens.
