Abstract (EN)

We live in a time when the images include voice, text and motion. This change visualizes the text as well as it conceptualizes the images. In the century we live in, both our perceptions and many events offered us are identified over the images. The incidents of our century can be fragmented by some important groundbreaking photograph. The concepts are general descriptions including common features of the objects and events and gathering them under a common name. In daily life, that the visuality plays an important role keeps the concepts from only being the descriptions of the words. The thesis brings a different perspective and reading type to the visuals with "image-notion" offered as a different description. "Image-notions" are the filters for reading and understanding the images. Thought begnis with imagination and then it turns into the image, form and emotion. Modern life displays itself, it offers over the demostrations and identifies. Vast majority of world population lives in the cities. The number of rural areas assuming the status of the city is increasing day by day. The image of the world is changing day by day. Air photographs are a fragment of this change. The cities of post-fordist era changed into a meta. VĠsuality is the basic tool of this meta; it is a kind of make-up. Thesis offers a new way of looking at the city and city visuality with the definition of "image-notion". Two essential elements of this century is a new form of perception with "image-notions". Ġstanbul is a city offering itself to be viewed and watched with its panaromic topography and two shores offering a view to each other. The historical background of the silhouette is examined, the sttruggle of being reinforced and highlighted of this visuality and topographic forms with the structures is read. The sttruggle of not being produced of sufficient visual record and not being protected of the ones produced, and that the visuality is looking for new description ways with censorship make the visuality reads in this geography more attractive.. The aim of the thesis is to set out on a visuality of Ġstanbul with the description of image-notion. During this journey, it is concluded that the most decisive visual elementin the visuality and visual change of the city is the bridge. The bridge is the image-notion of Ġstanbul. Ġstanbul gathers all the popularist statement such as a bridge between the the continents, a bridge between the civilizations, a bridge between cultures, the unifying bridge of Anatolian and Europe, east and west, traditional and modern, etc. …. In addition to this, the construction of Bosphorus bridge detracted the city from being a coastal city and moved it from a local sclae to metropolitan scale. The city population increased by accelerating creates the effects changing the image of the city day by day such as wide highways, high-density structures, adding five cities around Ġstanbul to itself. In the methodology of the thesis, some technical and artistic features of the images are used. As we problematize the elements such as form structure, material and period in order to understand the structures, we should also use certain elements in order to understand the meaning and rhetorics of the images. These technical and artistic building blocks systematize "image-notion" and ensure them to turn into a visualization tool. This methodology is also important for being grouped of the visual products under certain headings. Otherwise, each visual product will remain as a frozen illusions of the moment that it symbolise. The element that makes the matter as semantic and experimental is "image-notion". For example, the ground is used to make the subject and focus in a visual product apparent. Bridge is also used as a ground in the visuality of Ġstanbul in order that it gives place, meaning and locations of the sub-texts of the events. Pixel is the building blocks of digital images. In this part of the thesis, the structures in the air photographs were interpreted as the pixels of the image and it is made size and scale inquiry for the city. Blur is the being abstracted of the image and left either meaning or emotion. This part resolve the bridge from the direct relationship with image and it focuses on semantic and emotional descriptions and interpretations of the concept because bridge has not only the visual meanings but it is the important part of this city conceptually. Before Galata, the Golden Horn, Unkapanı, Bosphorus Bridge were constructed, water had also a function of linking bridge for Ġstanbul. These bridges constructed, are the materialised reflection of this image-notion.
