Abstract (EN)
In recent years popularity of animation movies all around the world has gradually increased. Since 1980s, a new animation sector has stood out in Far East, namely in Japan. Japanese cartoons, known as anime, appeals to the audience from all ages thanks to its original narration, animation technique, characters, wide theme spectrum, etc.One of the most important anime directors of Japan is without a doubt the Oscar winner Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki has become a world-renowned and followed director due to his original movies, the depth of his works, variety of characters, universal narration which accomplishes to melt the Western and Eastern cultures in the same pot, cultural sources, etc. Cartoons being successful in Japan, apart from the big industry in the West like Disney and the growth of an artist like Miyazaki are the products of Japanese culture, history, art and philosophical values. Not having more creative and popular cartoons based on our rich cultural accumulation and unsatisfactory outcomes of current cartoons are highly debated issues in our country. While having these debates in Turkey, we witness a powerful anime sector in the East and a successful model like Hayao Miyazaki in Japan. Here in this study, the reasons of Miyazaki?s international success have been researched and it is thought that these researches can contribute to the development and diversification of Turkish cartoons.Nine movies of Hayao Miyazaki were chosen and analyzed under the titles of common subjects and motifs, characters, time and place and the interaction between the West and the East with the aim of stating the reasons and defining the sources behind the success of Hayao Miyazaki. As a result; cultural roots and accumulations which nourish Miyazaki?s works, international values and the like were defined. In addition it was proved that Turkey had similar dynamics, unrealized cultural richness and a deep-rooted cultural accumulation which can inspire our cartoon artists.
