Abstract (EN)

Channel transitions are widely used in open channels and river flows to connect different channel sections to each other. Calculation of energy losses in channel transitions and development of different transition solutions to reduce losses is an important hydraulic engineering problem. In this thesis, an open source computational model has been developed for the calculation of head losses in channel transitions. The developed model was first applied to the closed flow problem, the variation of the bifurcation rate was examined and the results were compared with the numerical studies in the literature, and it was seen that the results obtained and the results in the literature were compatible with each other. Flow structures have been studied in detail for two- and three-dimensional channel geometries. Using the numerical model verified for closed flows, it was applied to free surface flows, and the energy loss at the channel transition was compared with the experimental measurement results in the literature. According to the comparison results, it has been seen that the numerical model can precisely calculate the energy losses in the channel transition in free surface flows. The performances of different transition formations were examined using the validated numerical model. In addition to that, head loss reduction performance of various separator designs is evaluated.
