The effect of the training program developed for children diagnosed with cancer and their parents on their compliance, knowledge and anxiety levels

Purpose: The aim of this study is to assess the effect of the interventions (clinical training guide, training video, social activities) performed to children newly diagnosed with cancer and their parents in accordance with VIDESOF training program on knowledge, anxiety and patient adherence process of the children and knowledge and anxiety level and family- centered care level of their parents. Method: This experimental was conducted non-randomized. The sample group consisted of 25 children and parents in the intervention group and 25 children and parent in the control group and all of the children were newly diagnosed with cancer and were in the age range of 9-18 years. The VIDESOF training program was prepared for the children and parents in the intervention group. A clinical training guide was prepared for the parent within the scope of the training program. On the other hand, a training video, in which a 15-year-old child diagnosed with leukemia 2.5 years ago and currently receiving maintenance treatment acted out, was prepared for the child. "Assessment Form for Knowledge Level about the Disease", "State and Trait Anxiety Inventory", "Assessment Form for Patient Adherence of the Child", "Family-Centered Care Scale for Parent" were used for measurements. The SAS 9.4 software was used for statistical analyses of all the data obtained from the study. Results: After the VIDESOF training program, it was determined that there were significant differences between disease-related knowledge, anxiety, and patient adherence of the child and between disease-related knowledge and anxiety level and family-centered care level scores in favor of the parents based on groups and measurement times (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that the interventions made in accordance with the VIDESOF training program had an effect of disease-related knowledge, anxiety, and patient adherence process of the child and disease-related knowledge and anxiety level and family-centered care level of the parent.
