Accessible tourism in Cappadocia: An examination of destination suitability

Millions of people worldwide participate in tourism activities, the opportunity to dicover the natural, cultural and historical riches of various regions. Moreover, recent events in our country (such as natural disasters, wars, pandemics, technological developments, etc.) have become significant psychological factors that have increased people's desire to travel. The changing demands and expectations of travelers have led businesses in the sector to continuously renew their systems. However, making tourism more inclusive and accessible has gained greater importance in recent years. Although tourism has a broad access network, this network may not be equally accessible to every individual. Access to tourist destinations remains a significant barrier for people with physical disabilities, the elderly, families and other groups with limited mobility. In this context, the aim of this study it to reveal the current state of accessible tourism in Cappadocia in terms of destination suitability, identify problems and propose solutions to these problems. This study uses qualitative research method. Among the qualitative research designs, a phenomenological approach has been adopted, which provides an interpretative analysis of how accessibility is perceived and implemented in a unique geographic and cultural setting like Cappadocia. Semi-structured interviews were used in the study. The data were examined through thematic analysis. A purposive sampling strategy targeting individuals with direct knowledge and experience in the region's tourism sector was applied. The social perspective of the study consists of hotel managers, professional tour guides, tourism employees, local residents, and tourism professionals in region. The data obtained were analyzed using NVivo14 software. The findings indicate that the current level of accessiblity in Cappadocia is inadequate, with some even suggesting that almost no measures have been implemented. Although steps have been taken to raise awareness in the region and improve accessibility, there are also statements emphasizing the need for sustainability in these efforts. Within the scope of these findings, recommendations have been made to businesses and tourism stakeholders regarding making accessible tourism in Cappadocia suitable fort he destination and increasing supply.
