The comparison of the levels of anxiety and depression in 18-25 years patients who apply to cardiology outpatient clinic for palpitation or chest pain

Emerging adulthood is a developmental period between 18 and 25 years. Symptoms of anxiety and depression have increased during this period. Anxiety and depression can cause physical complaints such as palpitations, chest pain, dyspnea, syncope, and dizziness. Most of the studies done in this area has been implemented in the first aid clinic. This study was performed only in patients who applied to the Cardiology Outpatient Clinic. The aim of this study is to compare the levels of anxiety and depression according to the presence and absence of heart disease in patients aged 18-25 years who apply to the Cardiology Outpatient Clinic for palpitations or chest pain. For this purpose, persons who 18-25 years old applied to Başkent University Adana Dr. Turgut Noyan Research and Application Center Cardiology Department for palpitaion or chest pain were taken into the study. Those in the same ages who came as a companion were taken to the control group. Participants were asked to fill in the Beck Anxiety Scale and Beck Depression Scale by themselves. Those who are currently following due to a heart disease, and those with chronic illnesses were not included in the study. Total 114 people were included in the study. Seventy-seven patients did not have any heart disease. Thirty-seven patients were diagnosed with heart disease. Fourty-four people were taken into the control group. The Beck Anxiety Scale and Beck Depression Scale scores of the groups were compared. There was significant difference in terms of The Beck Anxiety Scale and Beck Depression Scale scores between "no heart disease", "heart disease", and control group. In conclusion, the anxiety and depression scores of the patients who were diagnosed and not diagnosed with cardiac disease in 18-25 year olds who applied to the cardiology policlinic were more than the control group.
