Evaluation of the effect of platelet rich fibrin in the treatment of intrabony

Abstract (EN)
The intrabony defects that occurs as a result of periodontal disease, can negatively effect the prognosis of the tooth. Different types of materials are used for the treatment of intrabony defects. It has been reported that anorganic bovine bone mineral (ABBM) can be used in the treatment of intrabony defect with success. Platelet rich fibrin is a second generation platelet concentrate that contains growth factors in high concentration. The present study evaluated the additional effect of PRF and ABBM combination to ABBM alone in the treatment of intrabony defects clinically, radiographically and biochemically. Forty defects in fifteen patient were randomly treated with either PRF/ABBM (n:21) or ABBM (n:19) alone. At baseline, 3 and 6 months after surgery clinical measurements including Plaque Index, Gingival Index, Bleeding On Probing, Probing Depth, Gingival Recession, Clinical Attachment Level; radiographical measurements including vertical bone height, defect fill, percentage of defect fill and defect angle, biochemical measurements including the level of OPG and sRANKL in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) were obtained. All clinical, radiographic and biochemical outcome values obtained after surgery were statistically significantly different from the baseline values. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups except for gingival recession, clinical attachment level and OPG levels in GCF. In control group, the increase in gingival recession obtained at 3rd and 6th months after surgery was significantly higher than the test group whereas the gain in clinical attachment level was significantly lower. The increase in OPG concentration and total amount obtained at 3rd and 6th months after surgery compared to baseline was significantly higher in test group than the control group. The results of this study suggest that both PRF/ABBM combination and ABBM alone are effective in the treatment of human intrabony defects.
