Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to develop a scale in order to measure the structure of self deception. The scale development process, after the item pool had been, theoretical form of scale was arranged and it was sent to 10 experts in order to determine the content validity of the scale. Necessary corrections were made as a result of feedback from the experts. To collect data for factor analysis, the theoretical form of self-deception scale was conducted to 312 students going to Gazi University and 272 students going to Marmara University. As a result of factor analysis, it was seen that improved Self-Deception Scale was composed of Self Strengthening Self-Deception (12 items) and by Denying the Self-Deception (5 items) and embodied by 17 items that explained 48.431 % of the variance. After required validity and reliability analysis, the scale became ready to use. Self-Deception Scale and BIDR Self-Deception Sub-Scale (Paulhus, 2002) were applied together for related validity which is a type of criterion-related validity and correlation of .89 was found between the two scales. In order to determine the scale?s level of based on internal criteria of validity, the difference in mean scores of subgroup ? upper group was checked. I was observed that thanks to p<.001, there was significant difference statistically. Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficients for the whole scale and its sub-dimensions were calculated. Cronbach ? coefficient for the whole scale .89, Self Strenghthening Self-deception .88 and by Denying the Self-Deception .73 were found. Half of the test reliability?s correlation values of Self-Deception Scale were checked. The two semi-correlation, Spearman-Brown correlation and Guttman Split-Half correlation were calculated as in order of .76, .86 and .86. For test ? retest reliability, the scale was applied to a group two-week intervals, and the correlation between the two applications were found to be .88. As a result of research; it was observed that male students? levels of self-deception were higher than those of female students in terms of gender. Self-Deception Scale mean scores of students were compared in terms of mother?s education level and it was found that there was no statistically significant difference. In terms of father?s education level, it was found that the students?s levels of self deception decreased when fathers? education levels increased. In terms of academic achievement, it was seen that when the academic achievement of students increased, their levels of self-deception also increased. Key Words: Self-deception, reliability, validity.
