Evaluation of industrial areas within city in the context of sustainable urban development: A case of Bursa organized industrial zone

Bursa Organized Industrial Zone stands for a vivid material and cultural example of spatial and social changes, both in terms of industrial technologies and production processes which have changed in time and memory of those who have worked and lived with in the location. Being the first Organized Industrial Zone of Turkey, it has been also an early example of modern (city) planning concept and diverging settlements from industrial areas. So, this thesis, reflects upon the fact that no solid approach any kind ever has been made on BOSB – which is already suffocated by urban areas - concerning a viable urban transformation. After the introduction part where the purpose and scope of the thesis is explained, a comprehensive literature analysis about the main concepts has been made in the second part. Sustainability, sustainable urban development, the concepts of sustainability of pre-developed industrial areas and the criteria required to protect those areas as industrial heritage and how to integrate them into urban life were researched. In the third part of the thesis BOSB, which has been chosen as the case study area is introduced via historical development process along with the industrialization process of Bursa. In order to investigate the area in the context of sustainable urban development; necessary analysis studies have been done. In this context, observation, on-site detection, archive analysis, interview and survey techniques were used. In the conclusion part, in light of the findings obtained, suggestions on how the field can be evaluated in the context of sustainable urban development, which will ensure the conservation of its potentials and cultural values, have been developed. Bursa is one of most important industrial cities in Turkey. Stressing the fact that BOSB stands as an important figure in urban memory of Bursa and industrialization process of Turkey, most appropriate ways to carry BOSB to the future are discussed as part of this study.
