An exemination of urban park facilities for disabled people: the case of Zeytinburnu Çırpıcı City Park in İstanbul

In this master thesis, there is made an analysis on the features that city parks offer for disabled people. Çırpıcı City Park, found at Istanbul county Zeytinburnu district, is taken into account as the main structure of this thesis. A research on outdoor usage areas for disabled people is made from field observations at Çırpıcı City Park. This work includes related literature as reference. By taking different measurements for floor elements (park entrance, pedestrian way, staircase, ramp, parking lot), landscape equipments (seating, direction and sign boards, lightning equipment, waste bin, toilet, play equipment, sports area, water features) and boundary elements (vegetation and physical boundaries), results have been extracted. The results have been supported with visual materials and evaluated for outdoor standards on disabled people areas. Analyzing the problems and evaluating the results was the key to advising possible solutions in order to improve the situation for disabled people. As a result, the importance of landscape design has been emphasized not only for disabled people but for everyone going to public parks.
