Abstract (EN)
Urban voids decrease due to population growth, rapid and unplanned construction, especially in urban centers, and deterioration occurs in solid-volid balance in today's cities. During these processes, even urban voids reserved for disasters such as earthquakes enters the process of construction. This situation causes questions arround the existence and quality of urban voids. Through this perspective the thesis is aimed to determine the current status, of the breathable urban voids decreasing continuous existences in city, to evaluate their sufficiency for today and the future and to make suggestions such as protection areas. The research is aimed to ensure the continuity of the "voids" in the cities and provide the cities as "void", not as a settlement area. In the first part of the study; the purpose and scope of the study was demonstrated by supporting the literature summary containing the relevant sources. In the second part, the relationship between the concept of "void" and its relationship with architecture is examined through the problematic of urban voids definition, formation, classification, importance and existence. The third part of the study consists of a two stage case study. The first stage is based on a field study analysis that covers the borders of the city center of Düzce. The second stage of the research focused on "Spor Sokak", one of the busiest pedestrian areas and one of the most important urban spaces of the city. Spor Sokak has been examined detailly in terms of user perceptions and spatial qualities. The two stages research allows to grasp the voids on the city scale without breaking the context, and enable detailed analysis. The methodology of the first stage based primarily onthe existing urban voids in the city center identification and classification by using gap analysis (solid-volid, void category, green area, void density and road networks), personal observations, and their competencies have been revealed for today and the future. The second stage based on socio-spatial analysis of Spor Street by using concrete data obtained from spatial usage analysis, personal observations in the field and a survey study conducted on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the urban environment. Finally, the data that have been conducted in line with the examinations and analyzes made on the street and city scale were evaluated and the qualitative conditions of the existing urban voids were determined and suggestions were developed to improve their spatial qualities.
