A model proposal on urban transformation: the case of İzmir-Ferahlı District

Urban transformation, in other words changing the present pattern, occurs on one hand by the effect of a physical and technical reason to overcome the problems of urban growth, on the other hand by the effect of the targets of after 1980s process to overcome the capital accumulation process by the cities. The urban transformation fact which occurs in such a framework, took its place in the agenda of big cities by the attendance of a legal base. This concept, which municipalities started to use often, is seen more on the squatter areas which gained a legal identity but couldn?t become legitimized and can?t give a modern city view. In zmir city where similar processes are lived, urban transformation applications are made which are hidden behind the expressions like discharging the inconvenient areas for residential use and creating livable residential areas for the people living in squatter areas. In the city, where the urban transformation applications will increase in the following period, because of the declaration of the metropolitan municipality about Gürçesme district which will become `renewal area?, Ferahlı district is thought that it would be the subject of different development scenarios. So, that district is taken as the subject of this study. In this study, where the aim is to build a transformation model which is based on local dynamics and the expectations of the people living there, after the study area is determined, researches to find `the information of the local area? and questionnaire and deep conversations to learn about the expectations of people were done. After the findings reached were considered, the results found were associated with the hypotheses which were determined at the beginning of the study. The economic, spatial and social components which occurred after the evaluation were used to determine the targets of the study. After all these work, a model which is based on the local dynamics, which has extensions to improve the physical and socioeconomic structure of the district and which keeps the people living in their own district, was proposed.
