Abstract (EN)

Sustainable solid waste management principles have an important role in solving the waste management problems. Source reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, incineration, biogas recovery, and finally landfilling are the basic principles of sustainable solid waste management. In this thesis, Muratpaşa District of Antalya City is selected as the study area. Solid waste samples were collected from the field and the compositions as well as physical and chemical properties of the waste are determined. These data are used in three Life Cycle Assessment scenarios and the environmental impacts are determined. SimaPro7 program is used for the evaluation of the impacts. In the first scenario, solid wastes are collected commingled and sent to sanitary landfill for final disposal. In the second scenario, 37 %, 48 % and 60 % of the produced waste are source separated. Rest of the waste is deposited in sanitary landfill. In the third scenario, the commingled collected wastes are treated in a MBT (mechanical biological treatment) facility, recyclables are separated and the organics are composted. As the result of the evaluation of these scenarios based on LCA principles, the third scenario is determined as the most environmental friendly option.KEY WORDS: Antalya,Composting, Landfilling, LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), Muratpaşa Districts, Simapro-7, Source separation, Sustainable waste management.
