Comparison of the relationship between homocysteine serum level and other biochemical parameters in polycystic ovarian syndromepatients in Kirkuk/Iraq

Polycystic ovary syndrome is an endocrine disorder characterized by an ovulatory infertility, menstrual dysfunction. the disease has a global prevalence of 2.2-26%. Most of the symptoms associated with PCOS appear to be linked with either high androgen or insulin hormone levels. The study aimed at assessment of serum Homocysteine and some metabolic parameters in PCOS and compared them with control group. The study involved 90 PCOS female and 90 healthy subjects, both groups were assessed for the following parameters; homocysteine, Vitamin D, fasting Insulin, Insulin resistance, Cpeptide, HbA1c, Fasting blood sugar and lipid profile. The present study demonstrated that there was significant difference P<0.0001 between PCOS patients and control regarding homocysteine level. In addition, significant difference P<0.0001 was observed between PCOS patients and control concerning vitamin-D level. The present study revealed that there was significant difference P<0.0001 between PCOS patients and control regarding insulin level. Over all, homocysteine seems to be playing vital role in predicting early cardiovascular signs in PCOS patients. Insulin level may be applied in early assessment of prediabetes condition in PCOS cases.
