Abstract (EN)

In present study, ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, hot and cold water and waterextracts of dalbasti cherry (Prunus Avium L.) leaves were investigated. These extracts werestudied for antioxidant capacity and examined for its DNA damage protecting activity. Theantioxidant capacity of these extracts were evaluated using different antioxidant tests, including reducing power, free radical scavenging, hydroxyl radical scavenging, hydrogenperoxide scavenging, DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS radical scavenging,Deoxyribose assay, ß-Carotene bleaching assay and metal chelating activities. The content oftotal phenolic compounds in the methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, hot and cold water extractsof cherry (Prunus Avium L.) leaves was determined using Folin-Ciocalteus reagent andcompared with standart antioxidants BHT, Trolox and ?-tocopherol. Metanol and ethanolekstrakts showed a concentration-dependent free radical scavenging capacity and protectiveeffect on DNA cleavage. Ethanol and methanol extracts of cherry leaves. at 400?g/mlexhibited significant protecting activity against DNA strand scission by OH? on pBR322supercoiled plasmid DNA(95-98%). Total phenolic compounds in the cherry leaves extracts(ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, hot- water and water) were determined as gallic acidequivalent (meq/g dried leaves) 116.43;132.17;61.91;87.63 and 66,88 respectively.
