Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pharmacy students regarding best practices in hospital pharmacy in Türkiye

Hospital pharmacy practice is shifting from a drug-centered to a patient-centered approach, requiring pharmacists' engagement in clinical decision-making, patient monitoring, and workforce management. The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Basel Statements provide global standards, yet pharmacy students' preparedness for these guidelines is underexplored. This cross-sectional study assessed knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of pharmacy students in in Türkiye using a structured, Delphi-validated questionnaire with 26 knowledge items, 28 attitude items, and 25 practice items. Reliability testing showed good internal consistency for the knowledge scale (KR-20 = 0.838) and excellent consistency for the attitude (α = 0.892) and practice (α = 0.982) scales. Out of 600 invited students, only 125 completed the assessment. Participants were mostly female (76%), mean age 23.3 ± 1.7 years; 77.6% were in 4th or 5th year, and only 18.4% had prior Basel Statements awareness. Knowledge results showed that 91.2% rejected the notion of following prescriptions without considering patient needs, while 95.2% recognized the importance of prioritizing the monitoring of high-risk patients in resource-limited settings. Attitudes were largely positive, with 54.4% acknowledging global standards ensure quality care. Practices varied: 53.6% reported that they were involved in monitoring high-risk patients and documentation of this information, while 46.4% reported participating in research. Higher knowledge and attitude scores were associated with upper-year students, those who took ≥2 pharmacy practice courses, and as well with those who have done hospital practice experience course (p < 0.05). These findings indicate moderate to good preparedness but limited prior awareness, highlighting the need for structured education and experiential training to reinforce alignment with international standards.
