Abstract (EN)

This study aims to analyze the correlation between metric and fusion stages of the cervical vertebrae, the hyoid bone, and the spheno-occipital synchondrosis on Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) regarding the age and the sex. A total of 129 CBCT images from patients aged between 8-48 years, were subjected to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The general anatomical parameters evaluated on CBCT images for the second, the third and the forth cervical vertebrae, hyoid bone, and spheno-occipital bone were as follows: Cervical Vertebral Maturation Stages (CVMS), Anterior Vertebral Body Height (AVBH), Posterior Vertebral Body Height (PVBH), Vertebral Body Width (VBW), Superior Vertebral Body Thickness (SVBT), Inferior Vertebral Body Thickness (IVBT), Vertebral Body Concavity Depth (VBCD), Hyoid Maturation Stages (HMS), maximal Hyoid Body Width (maxHBW), minimal Hyoid Body Width (minHBW), Hyoid Body Thickness (HBT), Hyoid Body Depth (HBD), Hyoid Body Height (HBH), Spheno-Occipital Synchondrosis Stages (SOSS), and Basion to Sella length (BSL). Significance was evaluated at the p<0.05 level. There were no significant differences between the mean age of sexes at different stages of CVMS, HBMS, and SOSS (P>0.05). There was a significant difference between the sexes regarding the distribution of CVMS (P<0.05). There were significant differences between age groups of females regarding all parameters (P<0.05) except for AVBH2, VBW2, VBW3, VBCD3, VBCD4, BSL, HBT, and HBH (p> 0.05). Also, there were significant differences between age groups of males regarding AVBH2, PVBH2, VBCD2, AVBH3, PVBH3, VBCD3, AVBH4, PVBH4, VBCD4, maxHBW, minHBW, and HBD (P<0.05). There were significant differences between sexes regarding all parameters (p<0.05), except for VBCD2, AVBH3, VBCD3, AVBH4, VBCD4, SOSS, and HMS (p>0.05(. At CVMS1, there were significant differences between sexes regarding AVBH2, PVBH2, SVBT2, VBW3, and VBW4 (p<0.05). At CVMS4, there were significant differences between sexes regarding SVBT2, PVBH3, IVBT3, PVBH4, SVBT4, and HBH (p<0.05). At CVMS5 and CVMS6, there were significant differences between sexes regarding AVBH2, PVBH2, SVBT2, IVBT2, AVBH3, PVBH3, SVBT3, IVBT3, VBW3, xv AVBH3, AVBH4, PVBH4, SVBT4, IVBT4, VBW4, and VBCD4 (p<0.05). At HMS1, there were significant differences between sexes regarding all hyoid bone parameters (p<0.05). At HMS2, there were significant differences between sexes regarding all hyoid bone parameters (p<0.05) except for HBT (p>0.05). At SOSS1 and SOSS4, there were significant differences between sexes regarding BSL (p<0.05). There were significant correlations between all parameters (p<0.05) except the correlation between: Age with VBW3 and HBH, CVMS with SVBT2, IVBT2, VBW2, SVBT3, IVBT3, VBW3, SVBT4, IVBT4, VBW4, HBT, and HBH, SVBT2 with VBW2, VBCD3, VBCD4, and HMS, BSL with VBCD2, VBCD3, and VBCD4, HBH with VBW2, VBCD3, and HBT, HMS with IVBT2, VBW2, VBCD2, VBW4, HBH, and VBW3, SOSS with VBW2, IVBT2, VBW3, VBW4, BSL, and HBT, HBT with VBCD2 and VBCD3 (p>0.05). There were significant differences regarding the distribution of SOSS and HMS at each CVMS (p<0.05). There was a significant correlation between CVM, HMS, SOSS, and age (p<0.05). Due to the correlation between cervical vertebrae, spheno-occipital and hyoid bone parameters and maturation stages, then the maturation of growing subjects can be estimated by evaluating the spheno-occipital or the hyoid bone instead of the cervical vertebrae.
