Patient satisfaction of contraception methods and its effects on sexual function

In this study, it was planned to investigate the effects of five different contraception methods on patient satisfaction and sexual function. Between 20.01.2022 and 31.07.2022, 362 patients aged 19-45 years, who applied to Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital for any reason and were included in the study, were divided into 5 groups. Patients using combined oral contraceptives were included in Group 1. Patients using progestin-containing injections were included in Group 2. Patients who used copper-loaded intrauterine devices were included in Group 3. Patients who underwent sterilization with bilateral salphingectomy or bilateral tubal ligation were included in group 4. Group 5 included patients whose male partner was protected with a condom and who did not use any hormonal, surgical or barrier methods. The study was explained, privacy was ensured, voluntary participation was emphasized, and then patients were asked to complete the Turkish-language FSFI and Beck Depression Scale (BDI). Patients' demographic data and questionnaires were compared using IBM SPSS ver 21. The lowest satisfaction was observed in patients using IUD as a method of protection, while the highest satisfaction was observed in patients using condoms. In terms of total FSFI score, the highest score was 25.1±3.3 in Group 5. The lowest score was 23.8 ± 4.7 in Group 3. It was 24 ± 4.3 in Group 1, 24.8 ± 3.02 in Group 2, and 24.1± 6.05 in Group 4. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in total FSFI scores (p=0.06). In the sexual desire subgroup, the median value in Group 1 was 3 (1.2-5.4) and the lowest was observed. In the comparison of Group 1 with Group 2 and Group 5, the difference was statistically significant (p value 0.03 and 0.01, respectively). The lowest value in the sexual arousal subgroup was 3.3 (1.2-5.7) in group 3. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups between group 3 and group 5 (p=0.018). The median values in the orgasm subgroup were respectively; 3.6 (1.2-5.6), 4.4 (3.2-6), 4 (2.4- 5.2), 3.6 (1.2-6) and 4.4 ( 2-6) was found. The difference between Group 4 and Group 1 when compared to Group 5 was statistically significant (p= 0.01 and 0.01, respectively). In the lumbrication and satisfaction subgroup, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups. In the pain subgroup; the lowest score was 3.6 (0-5.6) in Group 3. Pain score for group 3 was statistically significantly lower compared to all groups. x Patients receiving Family Planning service should be well informed about the side effects as well as the effectiveness of the method. Although contraceptive methods have similar effects on sexual function and depression, it is valuable for patients and healthcare professionals to know that there may be differences in subgroups.
