The effect of hand massage applied to patients undergoing coronary angiography on anxiety and life findings

This study was conducted as a randomized controlled experimental study to examine the effect of hand massage applied to patients undergoing coronary angiography on anxiety and vital signs. The study was carried out in the daily patient service of the cardiology department of Çukurova University Balcalı Hospital. This study was completed with a total of 40 patients, including 20 interventions and 20 controls. Ethics committee approval, institutional permission, and written informed consent were obtained from the patients participating in the study. Data were collected using the patient identification form, vital signs form, State Anxiety (DAS) and Trait Anxiety Scale (SAS). Chi-square, Levene, Shapiro Wilk normality test and Pearson correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. Before going to angiography, the patients in the intervention group received a total of 10 minutes of hand massage on both hands. No treatment was applied to the patients in the control group other than their routine care. In the study, before the application of hand massage, the DAS score of the patients in the intervention group was 46.75±9.25, and the patients in the control group were 43.65±7.55, after the application, the DAS scores of the patients in the intervention group were 35.90±5.82, it was determined that the patients in the control group were 47.10±6.88, and this difference between the two groups was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). It was found that systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate decreased after the application of hand massage in the patients in the intervention group, while those of the patients in the control group increased significantly (p<0.05). As a result, it was determined that hand massage applied to patients who will undergo coronary angiography reduces the level of anxiety and causes a decrease in vital signs.
