Abstract (EN)
Introduction: Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the major reason of mortality and morbidity in our contry as well as all throughout the world. There is limited number of studies in the literature describing the relationship of CAD with C-Reactive Protein (CRP) which is an early marker of inflammatory response by increased levels and leptin which has an important role in the etiology of obesity. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of CAD with leptin and hs-CRP as regulators of body energy balance and affectors of obesity pathogenesis.Material and Methods: This study involved 83 patients evaluated at Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine Department of Cardiology with CAD diagnosis having positive coronery angiography results as the patient group (1st group). Control group involved 17 individuals with negative coronery angiography results (2nd group). Negative control group, on the other hand, included 40 individuals who were thought to be healty from the cardiological point of view (3rd group). Hs-CRP was evaluated by nefelometric analysis where ELISA method was used for leptin examination.Findings: The comparison of hs-CRP levels between the patient group according to the angiography results (1st group) and the group which did not receive angiography (3rd group) revealed a statistically significant difference (p=0.005). In the 2nd group, a directly proportional corelation was observed between leptin and hs-CRP (p=0.034). Leptin level was found to be significantly higher in the CAD group compared to the control group (p<0.001). Moreover, in the angiographically normal group, leptin level was found to be significantly higher compared to the control group (p=0.012).Results: According to the results of this study, it was observed that hs-CRP is a valuable marker for CAD. Leptin levels were fould to be higher for the patients carrying cardiovascular risk factors and applied to the Cardiology Department for any reason independent of the angiography results, compared to the the patients thought to be cardiologically healty. As a result, the effect of leptin on cardiovascular system will help to enlighten the relationship between obesity and coronery diseases. Further studies are needed to be carried out before any wider conclusions could be drawn
