Kovancılar and Palu's cultural assets

ABSTRACT Kovancilar And Palu's Cultural Assets Selvi CAN Master's Thesis FIRAT UNIVERSITY Institute of Social Sciences Department Of Art Hıstory January 2025, Page; XVII+288 Kovancılar, located in the province of Elazığ, is approximately 67 km away from the city center. It gained district status in 1988. It has been a settlement for Kovancılar since 1935. For this reason, there are no sources that shed direct light on the history of Kovancılar. Although the history of Kovancılar district is new, the region has a very deep-rooted history. For this reason, it is necessary to evaluate the history of Kovancılar with the history of Palu, to which it was formerly affiliated. Palu has been one of the living places of different civilizations ranging from the Sumerians to the Ottomans. Kovancılar and Palu, which have hosted various civilizations, today contain many historical cultural assets as they are the region where different ethnic groups live together. Religious and civil structures are important among these cultural assets. Some of the cultural assets that are the subject of the thesis have survived to the present day, while others exist as ruins that have been destroyed or are about to collapse due to climate and human-made destruction. In this thesis study, the architectural features, materials used and decorative elements of the cultural assets identified within the borders of Kovancılar and Palu were examined and the existence of these structures was tried to be documented.
