Analysis and classification of the sources of the science of al-Qira'at

This study explores the sources of Qur'anic Qiraʾat (readings), through which this discipline became established as one of the sciences related to the Book of Allah, the Almighty. It traces the primary works that documented the ten mutawatir readings, from the beginnings of authorship in this field up to the era of Abu Muhammad al-Qasim ibn Firrah al-Shatibī. Among these sources are those upon which Ibn al-Jazarī relied in his foundational work al-Nashr fī al-Qiraʾat al-ʿAshr. The research adopts a descriptive and inductive methodology, introducing printed and manuscript works, as well as referencing lost sources. Each book is presented with a descriptive overview, including information on its author, subject, and methodological features, in order to facilitate access for researchers. An effort has been made to compile these sources as comprehensively as possible and to arrange them chronologically according to the death dates of their authors. Many significant works in this field and others have been lost over time or remain forgotten in manuscript collections—either unidentified or inaccessible due to restricted libraries or neglect. This underscores the urgent need for Islamic academic institutions and research centers to support the preservation, restoration, and publication of such heritage.
