An examination of the managerial experiences of non-formal education center administrators during crisis periods

This study aims to examine the social responsibilities of non-formal education centers and maturation institutes in Turkey during crisis periods, as well as the impacts of these crises on the functioning of these educational institutions. The focus of the study is to identify the attitudes, measures taken, and strategies employed by the administrators of these institutions during crises. In this context, the effects of crises such as earthquakes, wars, pandemics, floods, and wildfires on the operations of educational centers, educational policies, and the services they provide to the community are addressed. This research is qualitative and employs a holistic single case study design. The study group comprises administrators (n=13) from non-formal education centers and the maturation institutes in five central districts of Antalya (Kepez, Aksu, Muratpaşa, Konyaaltı, and Döşemealtı). The study adopts hermeneutic phenomenology for presenting and interpreting the data based on direct quotes from the administrators. Purposeful sampling methods, including criterion sampling and convenience sampling, were used in selecting the study group. Data were collected using semi-structured interview forms and analyzed through content analysis and descriptive analysis. According to the findings, administrators encounter various difficulties in economic, educational, social, and educationalteaching processes during crises. Non-formal education centers are capable of producing health products, clothing, shelter, and emergency supplies during these periods. However, these centers face various obstacles in the production process, including changes in production conditions, difficulties in material procurement, challenges in recruiting voluntary labor, and sudden price increases.
