ABSTRACT FACTORS AFFECTING SERUM S100B AND NEURON SPECIFIC ENOLAZ LEVELS IN CHRONIC MIGRATING PATIENTS Chronic migraine is defined as a headache where the pain lasts for 15 or more days per month for a period of longer than 3 months and at least 8 days with pain that meets the IHS migraine diagnostic criteria and responds to triptan or ergotamine. Several recent studies investigated serum NSE levels, which are especially indicative of neuronal damage, and serum S100B levels, which is a marker of glial cell injury to determine whether cellular brain damage develops during the headache and interictal periods in migraine patients, and conflicting results were obtained. The present study included 30 chronic migraine patients and 20 healthy individuals in the control group. Initially 25 mg/day amitriptyline was administered to the patient group and the dose was raised eventually to 75 mg/day. The conditions of the patients were evaluated before and after they received 3 months of 75 mg/day dose therapy. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether there was any cellular damage in the brain, and if there was, whether the cellular damage in the brain was reduced as the patient clinically recovered at the end of the treatment by observing serum NSE and serum S100B levels. Based on the results of the study, there was no significant difference between serum NSE and S100B levels of the group of healthy volunteers and chronic migraine patients. Correlation between serum S100B and NSE levels, and age and medical history in the family was evaluated and no significant difference was observed. There was a positive correlation between these two markers before and after treatment in the chronic migraine patient group, but there was no correlation in the healthy volunteer group. Increased serum S100B and NSE levels in the patient group that were observed in previous studies conducted to compare episodic migraine patients with healthy volunteers could mean that there is a different neuroglial response process in chronic migraine patients when compared to episodic migraine patients. However, conflicting results obtained in various studies suggest that it is necessary to conduct further studies to use serum S100B and NSE levels as neuronal damage markers in treatment and determination of the prognosis.
