Occupational problems of hairdressing and beauty care teachers

The purpose of this research is to determine the occupational problems of the teachers of hairdressing and beauty information working in the vocational high schools, vocational education centres giving education in the field of hairdressing and beauty information and to bring up suggestions oriented to resolving these problems starting from the obtained findings.This research was performed by taking the opinions of 56 of 126 teachers of hairdressing and beauty information working in the vocational high schools, vocational education centres in the provinces of Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, Icel, Ordu, Gaziantep in the educational year of 2006-2007.The research has been restricted with the opinions of the teachers of hairdressing and beauty information regarding students, coordinateness, usage of equipment, studio accoutrements, career development, subjects of education programme, administration, teaching profession and will be limited with whether there is a significant difference or not regarding the school type which the teachers are working and the views of their graduate.The findings of the research are summarized below1)The readiness levels of the students are not sufficient for the field and it may be mentioned that this profession influences the attitude and behavior of the students in a significantly positive way. According to the survey data, it was observed that the teachers are left alone when attempting to solve the students? problems.2)The coordinatorship is not executed in a careful manner. It may be mentioned that the skill training in the enterprises have not adequately achieved their goals.3)The management is not able to provide enough convenience in supplying equipments and that, due some equipments being personal, parents are not able to supply these. Besides, according to the survey data it was determined that students are not able to use potentially dangerous equipments in a sufficiently healthy and smooth manner.4)It may be mentioned that the heat and ventilation conditions of workshops are very suitable for practice performing; however their dimension, equipments and electric and water systems are not equipped enough. Due to insufficient equipage, practice on customers requiring serious efforts may not be realized according to the survey data.5)It may be mentioned that required qualities are not given adequately in teachers college where preparatory teaching skills and knowledge concerning the fields of the students shall be provided to students. According to the survey results, it was observed that guidance counselors are not chosen incisively during the internship, the first year of school-teaching, and that the on-the-job training is inadequate.6)It was observed that the subjects falling within the scope of the field training program aren?t taught In line with the plans, due to the insufficiency of scientific, up to dateness, practicability and functionality levels.7)According to the survey results, it may be mentioned that the management has teachers perform tasks not falling within their responsibility.8)It was observed that the teachers consider this field harder than other profession fields.9)It has been determined according to the data from the questionnaire that the teachers of Vocational High School and Vocational Education Centre, included in the sampling group share the same opinions on students, coordinateness, usage of equipment, career development, administration. However, since the vocational high school and Vocational Education Centres have different student structures, it has been ascertained by results of the questionnaire that they hold different opinions on supply and use of tools and instruments, workshop equipments, syllabus topics, and teaching.10)It has been determined according to data from the questionnaire that teachers with different seniority level, included in the sampling group, hold same opinions on issues regarding the students, coordinateness, use of tools and instruments, workshop equipment, career development, the selection of the subjects, administration, teaching.
