The myth of individual freedom and the Losers Club in the cultural industry

Having a linguistic and visual technique, cinema has been a phenomenon and technology that interests and affects societies and hence individuals since its first day as a "mass media". In this sense, it can be said that; cinema can be used as a tool for "language and discourse" for the "sovereign", that is, for individuals living in the community by the government in power. Individuals act with some value judgments and ideologies in the societies they live in. Cinema has been the most effective technique used by the sovereign/power in order to determine these values/judgments and ideologies and to establish a "one-dimensional" structure within the society and to establish hegemony. The most effective dissemination method used in the 21st century is to use the "language and discourse" for the unconscious of the individuals through mass media (media and cinema), and to spread the intended "ideology" from below to the bottom. In this way, the culture consumed in societies is produced, presented and consumed for individuals' unconscious and unconscious in the form of culture industry, not from below, but from the top, in the direction desired by the sovereign/power. In this study, the movie "Losers' Club" has been determined as a sample in order to obtain how the "ideology" hegemony aimed by the sovereign/power is established as a "one-dimensional" structure by using mass media (media and cinema). As the study has the purpose and claim of conducting research on a social subject, the critical technique of discourse analysis based on the "us-them" opposition of Teun Van Dijk has been preferred as the method of research. The reason for making this choice is to use the advantages of critical discourse analysis in order to investigate media contents for the "critical paradigm". Accordingly, critical discourse analysis has been carried out for the Losers' Club. In order to obtain many concepts and theories about the work carried out, especially the culture industry and individual freedom concepts, the opinions of the members of "Critical Theory" are discussed, the validity of the current assumptions of the study is discussed and tested. In this context, resources related to the subject, such as books, theses, articles, etc., whose scientific validity are not discussed, have been used. Finally, the evaluation of the result from both parts of the study has been interpreted in the conclusion. Along with the critical discourse analysis conducted for the Losers' Club, the aim is to demonstrate that mass media (media and cinema), if desired, are a powerful "discourse" technique used to reproduce "ideology" even when "criticizing" the culture industry. While cultural industry working as "Critical Theory" by trying to provide contributions, the purpose of guiding the work to be carried out for cultural industries in the context of Turkey is aimed.
