Abstract (EN)
Psychological Security in the Qur'an: The Case of the "Ulū al-ʿAzm" Prophets** ABSTRACT This study explores the concept of psychological security (al-amn al-nafsī) as presented in the Qur'an and examines its decisive role in human formation and the establishment of social stability. It argues that psychological security is not a transient emotional state; rather, it is a divinely-sourced serenity and tranquility that emerge through faith in God, submission to His commands, and the proper embodiment of tawḥīd. The study analyses the doctrinal, spiritual, devotional, and legal principles set forth by the Qur'an to establish psychological security, highlighting their impact on purifying the human self and eliminating anxiety, fear, and inner turmoil. It also delineates the ways in which this Qur'anic model diverges from modern psychological approaches and formulates a God-centered conception of the human being. The research emphasizes that psychological security is not limited to moments of crisis; it is a guiding principle throughout all stages of life, stabilizing human behavior. Thus, the study offers a framework that relates the Qur'an's principles of mental well-being to the needs of contemporary individuals and provides insights capable of addressing modern challenges. In the applied section, the study examines the Ulū al-ʿAzm prophets—Noah, Abraham, Jesus, Moses, and Muhammad (peace be upon them)—as exemplary embodiments of psychological security. These great messengers represent the highest degrees of trust in God, patience, confidence in the divine promise, and steadfastness in the face of trials. The research illustrates how psychological security is reflected in their narratives: Noah's prolonged perseverance, Abraham's steadfastness before his people, the divine protection granted to Jesus from birth, the reassurance of Moses' mother and Moses' composure before Pharaoh, and the Prophet Muḥammad's صلى الله عليه وسلم experience of divine support during the Hijrah and the battles. Ultimately, the study concludes that the Qur'an provides a holistic system of psychological security grounded in faith and righteous action, and that the prophetic narratives constitute a profound educational model that cultivates psychological balance, inner peace, and spiritual tranquility—needs that remain constant for humanity across all ages.
