Abstract (EN)

The current lifestyle of people has disrupted the balance of nature, created environmental pollution and caused deeper damage to the environment every passing day. These damages have affected all kinds of living things and have brought environmental pollution to a global level. The environmental pollutions in question, which affect economies and social lives and therefore sustainability, harm countries to an extent that cannot be prevented. It is becoming increasingly difficult for countries to reduce the damages that occur. The reason for this difficulty is that environmental awareness in societies is late and that scarce resources are rapidly consumed in line with unlimited needs in the process until this awareness is formed. Today, among societies that have begun to develop environmental awareness, cooperation has begun to be established to take measures on a global scale and produce various solutions. In this regard, action is taken within the scope of various international agreements. In addition to international agreements, policy instruments such as tax policies, subsidies, standards, pollution permits and bans have been developed in line with various principles. In order to cope with environmental problems, taxes have become an important policy tool, especially within the policies established by the European Union. The reflections of environmental policies implemented in the European Union in Turkey may differ. In this study, environmental policies implemented in Turkey and European Union countries were evaluated comparatively based on the basic reasons mentioned above. In the light of the evaluations made, it was concluded that Turkey could not fully use its potential in combating environmental pollution. Based on this, Turkey needs to implement policies based on exemplary countries in a way that will increase the potential of environmental policies.
