Investigation of applicability of landfill gas potential of Kütahya province to electricity

Solid waste production has also increased with the increase of the population in Turkey. The increase in solid waste production has caused many problems. In order to solve these problems, Turkey has adopted sustainable waste management and gained a different perspective to waste. The most important of these points of view is the generation of energy from solid waste. Solid waste landfills are among the largest sources of methane. As such, it aims to use the storage gas generated in the storage areas for energy production. Within the scope of this study, the analysis of electricity generation potential by using the landfill gas that will occur in Kütahya 2nd class sanitary landfill has been made. Kütahya 2nd class landfill consists of 3 lots (cells). The 1st lot of the landfill started operations in 2011 and stopped the disposal purchase in the first months of 2021. The 2nd lot of the landfill started solid waste disposal starting in 2021 and it is planned to be used for 7 years. It is planned that the 3rd lot of the landfill will start waste collection in 2028. In order to determine energy recovery for Kütahya 2nd class sanitary landfill, the landfill gas and electricity generation amount were calculated separately for each lot by using the LandGEM model during the period between 2011-2053, in line with the population and waste amounts.
