Abstract (EN)

Wave energy is recognized today as a significant renewable source of power with a considerable energy density with minimum environmental impact. Studies on wave characteristics are being carried out with increasing development and interest, and knowledge of wave characteristics is needed in order to design and install wave energy generation systems in a given area. In this respect, the determination of the probability distribution functions of the mean wave period, height of significant waves and wave direction is important to ensure an optimal and successful plan and installation of wave power generation systems. This study investigated potential of wave energy in the north Aegean Sea using Weibull and Rayleigh probability density models. To achieve the desired results in the study, hourly significant wave heights, mean wave periods and wave directions covering one year were used. Calculations revealed that the annual average wave power potential, mean wave period, and significant wave height of the buoy measurement point in the north Aegean Sea were 1.0145kW/m, 4.170s and 0.5573m respectively. This information can help electrical facility operators and policymakers determine the opportunities, benefits, costs and risks of developing Turkey's wave energy converter industry. Keywords: Ocean power; Wave energy; North Aegean Sea; Mean wave period; Significant wave height
