Abstract (EN)

In this study, the historical and cultural dimensions of the Turkish Cypriot press were considered and the current situation was tried to be discussed. The newspapers, which constitute a very important dimension of the conflict and the struggle on the Cyprus island, have been both a result and a cause of the politics of the cause since the Ottoman Empire when Cyprus Turkish press first emerged. This situation, which continued up to 2000s, has been broken with the 2004 Annan Plan Referendum and the TRNC press has undergone a change and transformation in this context. This lies also at the basis of the problems of today's TRNC press, evolving from an culture of propagandism to an understanding that capitalist relations are dominant. In addition, the rise of internet media and ethical issues are other important issues. In this study, multiple research methods were applied; 15 newspapers, 2 public media institutions, Cyprus Turkish Journalist Association and TRNC Media Ethics Committee editors/managers and a survey of journalists. In the research, the current problems in the Turkish Cypriot press were tried to be explained with its historical dimensions and the dynamics that formed the existing press culture were discussed.
