Abstract (EN)

11 THE INVESTIGATION OF ELECTRODE SURFACES OF AN IR IMAGE CONVERTER ( M.Sc. Thesis ) H. Soner KIYMAZ GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY December -2001 ABSTRACT In this study we investigate the role of the semiconductor photodetector surface on the mechanisms of the image formation in a planar IR image converter. The IR radiation excites the photosensitive detector of the device thus controlling the current density and the visible light emission form the gas discharge gap. By bombarding the electrode surface, a part of the discharge energy is transferred to the electrodes of the system through the electron-ion flow, leading to a desorptive mechanism of the electrode surface material. During the treatment of the GaAs surface, the transition from Townsend to the glow discharge was primarily due to the effectiveness of desorptive and physico-chemical interactions in the discharge gap. The profilemeter photograph showed that the density of the desorpted GaAs surface material depends on the energy of bombarding particles. The quality of plates was analyzed using both the profile and spatial distributed light emission intensity data showing the external homogeneity in the surface of the semiconductor plate. Thus, the surface quality of the photodetector plate can be assessed exactly and the size and location of the external inhomogeneities in the semiconductor plate to be ascertained.
