Abstract (EN)
Looking at a variety of studies about parental attitudes in which different variables are examined, It was found out that parental attitudes are important factors leading to the appearance of some behaviours. The relationship of parents and their way of directing their children are likely to influence the communication of their children within the society and among their peers. At the same time, it is possible that it may lead to an influence on the perceived self-esteem of the adolescents. The interrelated parental attitude can be said to affect the social environmental communication and the virtual communication ways of the adolescents. In this research high school students, their way of perceiving their parents, their perceived self-esteem, cyber bullying and cybervictimization and the relationship of these have been examined. The model of the research will be the relational scanning method. Research has been done on students who study at 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grades in Private Anatolian High Schools in Küçükçekmece Istanbul. The sampling group consists of a total of 310 students, 163 (52.6%) of whom are boys and 147 (47.4%) of whom are girls. The age range is between 14 and 18 with an average of 15.77(SS=.896). Before data was collected, students were provided with parental approval forms confirmed by the Ministry of Education to be signed by their parents and brought back. After the submission of parental approval forms, students were given Informed Approval Forms to get their own approval and Personal Information Form, Parental Attitude Inventory, Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale, Cyber Bullying and Cybervictimization Scale were applied. In accordance with the variables and the conditions of the application of parametric tests, the following tests were applied: one sample t-test, one-direction variance analysis (ANOVA), Scheffe and Tukey tests and Pearson Correlation Test for the comparison of ANOVA tests. Having asked questions and examined the responses about the parental or the elder family members' control mechanism factor on the examination of Cyber Bullying and Cybervictimization experiences, it was found out that the time that 49% of participants spent on virtual environment was controlled by their parents or an elder family member and that time 51% of participants spent on virtual environment was not controlled by their parents or an elder family member. There was no difference seen in relation with gender, between perceived self esteem and cybervictimization. There is a positive correlation between democratic parental attitudes and perceived self esteem, while a negative correlation between authoritative parental attitudes and perceived self esteem exists. Authoritative parental attitude is found out to lower perceived self esteem. There has been no found influence of protective parental attitude over self esteem. Research has shown that higher democratic attitude of parents results in less cyber bullying, while authoritative and protective parental attitude result in more cybervictimization. There is a negative correlation between democratic parental attitude and cyber bullying; nevertheless, there is a positive correlation among authoritative, protective parental attitude and cyber bullying. Thus, authoritative and protective parents may lead the adolescents to cyber bullying. A positive relation has been found between cybervictimization and perceived self-esteem. The more the perceived self-esteem is, the more cybervictimization occurs. Furthermore, there has been no relation found between cyber bullying and self-esteem.
