Abstract (EN)

Rapid population growth worldwide has resulted in environmental, economic, and social challenges that have transformed Cities into dynamic yet increasingly fragmented systems. Therefore, cities are becoming more dynamic and complex than predictable systems. This thesis examines how resilience theory can be applied to enhance social systems within the urban context. In 1973, C.S. Holling presented the theory of 'resilience,' which indicates the ability of the system to absorb disturbances and maintain its functionality, combined alongside Kevin Cunningham's framework for engaging urban design resilience strategies that identify key social resilience objectives, including improved connectivity, equitable access to public spaces and fostering social cohesion to address Mahmutbey social challenges. This research employs a multi-method approach, combining a literature review of social resilience frameworks, in-depth case study analysis, and site-specific application to Mahmutbey through developed implementations of strategies to address the neighborhood's fragmented social fabric and insufficient public spaces while aligning it with resilience theory principles. These strategies are designed for Mahmutbey and provide a replicable framework for addressing similar urban challenges for other neighborhoods in different contexts. The findings contribute to a broader discourse on resilience theory by demonstrating applicability at the neighborhood scale. Also, it provides policymakers and urban designers with a framework for fostering social resilience in diverse urban contexts.
