A comparative analysis of Iranian Dastgah music and Turkish makam music with the example of Mahur Dastgah

The aim of this study is to investigate the similarities and differences between Iranian Dastgah Music and Turkish Makam Music. The identification of similarities and differences between Iranian and Turkish Makam Music aims to contribute to the field of music terminology. The significance of this research lies in the lack of detailed analysis on the "Gushes" despite the general information provided on Destgahs and Gushes in Iranian Music studies in Turkey. This study highlights the importance of examining the Gushes that form a Dastgah in order to analyze them. Additionally, the comparative analysis of the Gushes of the Mahur Destgah with Turkish Makam Music is also significant as it is the first study of its kind in the literature. A descriptive research model was used for this study. The relational scanning model aimed to determine the similarities between the modal structures of Iranian Dastgah Music and the Makams in Turkish Makam Music. Radifs, seven Destgahs, and five Avazes accepted in Iranian music were utilized. The Mahur Dastgah consists of seventeen Gushes. The data for Iranian music was obtained from The Radif of Abdollah Davami, Daryush Tilayi's notations, while information on Turkish Makam Music was sourced from Emrah Hatipoğlu's book "Makamlar ve Terkibler" (Modes and Compositions). The findings reveal that there are structural similarities between Iranian Dastgah Music and Turkish Makam Music; however, there are also some differences. The methods of constructing melodic sequences differ between the two musical traditions. Furthermore, it was determined that while Iranian music utilizes Radif, Dastgah, Avaz, and Gushes, Turkish Makam Music focuses on elements such as perde and seyir. In conclusion, this study identifies structural similarities and differences between Iranian Dastgah Music and Turkish Makam Music. It contributes to music terminology and enhances our understanding of the relationship between Iranian and Turkish Makam Music. Based on the findings of this study, you can discuss in detail the similarities and differences between Iranian Dastgah Music and Turkish Makam Music in your thesis, providing a new contribution to the literature in this field. In this study, which can be considered as a source that examines Mahur Dastgah, it has been determined that two gushes of Mahur Dastgah are not similar to the Turkish Music Makams, twelve gushes are partially similar, and three gushes are exactly similar.
