Abstract (EN)

Objective: The purpose of this work is to determine the relation between anger and MetS, the relation between mets and its risk factors and the prevalence of MetS and its risk factors among women at the age of 20 and over in the central district of Malatya.Material and Method: This cross-sectional study has been conducted between April and September 2008. Thirty midwife care point zones connected to primary healthcare centers of the central district of Malatya have been selected by a systematic sampling method. By accessing 20 to 25 individuals of each group this study encompasses 669 individuals. On the previous day a questionnaire about socio-demographic and socio-economic factors, anamnesis, lifestyles and anger status had been applied. Next day individuals have been called to the primary healthcare centers to measure their heights, weights, blood pressure and waist circumference. Blood samples for lab analysis have been drawed. MetS has been defined according to NCEP ATPIII criterion. Chi-square tests, t-tests and logistic regression method have been used to analyze data. Results: Average age of the women included in this study was 41,9 ±12,7 years. MetS prevalence was % 30.9, for the age group of 60 and over prevalence was % 61,3. MetS frequency increases with the age (P=0.0001). There has been found a statistically meaningful relation between MetS prevalence and the educational background, marital status, body- mass index, family type, smoking status and number of pregnancies. There has not been found a statistically meaningful relation between MetS prevalence and physical activity, income, anamnesis and anger. The most common MetS parameters findings of our study have been abdominal obesity (% 45.6, waist circumference>88) and low HDL. Hypertension (% 35.1) and high TG (% 30.8) were the most common second and third findings. Among MetS diagnosed women included in this study the most common finding was fasting blood glucose (% 76.7), which were followed by high TG (% 69.4) and hypertension (% 63.5).Conclusion: In Malatya MetS is strongly related with abdominal obesity. Taking control over or avoiding obesity plays a crucial role in avoiding the development of MetS. This requires an effective training, an appropriate nutrition and increasing physical activity.
